The SIM Card Archive is a newly developed collection at UT Austin’s Critical Data Studies Lab, led by Dr. Amelia Acker. The collection serves not only as a special collection, but also as a research site to develop new methods of experiencing and researching digital data through mobile memory artifacts (primarily SIM cards, but other mobile devices as well). The use of technology in museums and archives is not new, but few of these institutions focus directly on the impact of cultural heritage mobile computing artifacts. Collecting mobile devices and their associated SIM cards offer new ways of knowing and understanding data archaeology of flash storage and a clearer understanding of mobile technology as a whole.
